Absolute Beginners

Notice Website Builder Wanted

1. INTRO

Absolute Beginners is a new kind of factory in Park Royal, NW London, where local young people can learn how to make everyday products in radically sustainable ways.

We’re looking for a coder/web-developer who can help us build a shop on our existing website. We’ll need someone who can advise on plug-ins, edit the plug-in to our designers’ spec, test it, and make sure it’s secure. We have a budget of £1000.

2. WHAT IS ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS?

We run paid workshop programmes where local 17-21 year olds learn how to make an everyday project, using local, recycled materials, simple tools, and off-grid or low-carbon power. You can see some of our recent work on our instagram, here.

The project aims to help young people gain the skills and confidence to produce real, useful products; build a working, alternative model for making the things we need; and open up a space to talk about what we consume, where our stuff comes from, and how we can build a different economy, fit for a world in a climate emergency.

3. WHAT DO WE NEED?

Our website currently runs on wordpress. It was designed by Jon Cannon, and built by Artur Turkuli.

We now want to add a shop to this site. We need you to:
→ Source a selection of plug-ins that can do the job (and explain their pros and cons)
→ Install our selected plug in
→ Make some small alterations to the navigation (no design changes)
→ Hack/change the code to reflect the design we want (with space to push back/change the design if it won’t work
→ Make sure the site works on both desktop and mobile
→ Help us test the shop
→ Make sure everything is secure

4. PRECEDENTS

Please note, this is just in terms of functionality, not design.
